All-natural cotton, which comes from the soft vegetable seedpod of the cotton plant, is the most commonly used fiber in clothing. It’s soft, breathable and dense which gives it the high-quality feel that many consumers prefer. It’s also ideal for screen and digital full-color printing since it can hold ink longer than almost any other fabric and is less susceptible to bleeding.
Poly/cotton blends, like 50/50 shirts, combine cotton with polyester to make a garment that is lighter than its pure cotton counterpart and also lower in price but still soft and comfortable. Polyester is a synthetic fiber that is more flexible than cotton but slightly less breathable. The goal in formulating poly/cotton blends is to create clothing and textiles with the all the positive qualities of both materials. While poly/cotton blends can be screened and digitally printed with great success, it’s also ideal for sublimation, laser printing and heat transfer.
Performance or tech fabrics are made by blending a number of different materials in order to create a multifunctional fabric that can offer moisture management, UV protection, wind or water-resistance, thermo-regulation or even anti-microbial properties. The end result is a garment that provides maximum comfort during athletic activity. This fabric is ideal for embroidery, debossing, laser, and full-color heat transfer.
You might assume that knit fabric is reserved for winter hats, scarves and gloves, but many sweaters, sweatshirts and hoodies are also made from knit. Knit is created when yarns are held together by a series of loops in either rows or columns. The end result is a fabric that is extremely soft, flexible and perfect for cold temperatures. Embroidery and heat transfer are perfect for knit garments.
Woven fabric is very self-explanatory, as it’s made when fibers are woven together in crisscross pattern. In regards to apparel, woven fabric is most commonly used for dress or button up shirts. You may have already heard of oxfords, poplins or twills, which are all shirts of this particular variation. They give off a sleek, professional appearance because they are crisp and have very little stretch. This stiffness makes the fabric ideal for creating special details, like collars, pleats or ruffles. Woven fabric makes a wonderful canvas for embroidery and heat transfer.
Denim is a type of woven fabric but is so distinctive and frequently used to make apparel products that it requires a category of its own. Made from sturdy cotton twill, denim is woven together by a warp yarn, which is typically blue, and filling yarn, which is typically white.
